                    CDVIEW - QUICK USAGE GUIDE
                  Sixel CD-ROM Picture Door  (Win32)
                          NewWave Software
==========================================================================

CDVIEW is a BBS door. Callers browse picture CD-ROMs, folders and ZIP
files, view pictures as sixel graphics, read ANSI art and text in a
scroller (with ANSI music), and download what they like with ZModem.

This is the short version. HOWTO.TXT is the step-by-step setup guide
and CDVIEW.TXT is the full reference.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
 PART 1 - FOR THE SYSOP
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

 What you need in the door folder (e.g. D:\CDVIEW):

     CDVIEW.EXE    the door
     CDVIEW.CFG    the settings
     FONTS\ the 10 BGI fonts (TRIP LITT SANS GOTH SCRI SIMP TSCR
                   LCOM EURO BOLD .CHR) - recommended if you have RIP art
     JXL.DLL, JXL_CMS.DLL, JXL_THREADS.DLL
                   optional - only for JPEG XL (.JXL) pictures. All 32-bit.
                   Copy all of them or none.

 The door folder must be writable: CDVIEW makes CDVTEMP\ (scratch space
 for files unpacked from ZIPs) and, if you turn them on, CDVIEW.DBG and
 NODEn.LOG there.

 Setup in 4 steps:

  1. Edit lines 1-4 of CDVIEW.CFG - drop file type, drop file folder,
     your name, your BBS name. Keep them in that order.
  2. Add one AREA= line per CD-ROM or picture folder:

        AREA=1|Bart's GIF Pictures|D:\CDVIEW\CDROM\BART
        AREA=1|GIFs Galore|E:\
        AREA=2|ANSI Archive|D:\CDVIEW\ANSI\ANSIA *

     Type 1 = CD-ROM, 2 = Collection. A * after the path lists every
     file in that area whatever its extension (good for ANSI packs).
  3. Add the door to a BBS menu. It is a 32-bit DOOR32 door:

        D:\CDVIEW\CDVIEW.EXE /N%N /P %P\DOOR32.SYS

     (use your BBS's own codes for node number and drop file folder)
     Renegade with NetFoss NFU:

        nfu.exe ... "d:\cdview\cdview.exe /n 1 /d \bbs\temp1\door.sys
                    /socket 420" (all on one line)
  4. Log on and try it. Test with no caller: CDVIEW.EXE /L

 Command line switches:

     /N<node>        node number              /N1  or  /N 1
     /P <drop file>  drop file, or its folder /P D:\BBS\TEMP1\DOOR32.SYS
     /SOCKET <n> caller's socket handle (if your launcher passes it)
     /D <file> what NFU passes - its folder is used
     /L local test mode, no caller

 A drop file named on the command line is tried first. Lines 1-2 of
 CDVIEW.CFG are only the fallback.

 The settings most sysops touch (full list at the bottom of CDVIEW.CFG):

     MAXWIDTH / MAXHEIGHT largest picture sent, in pixels (800 x 480)
     DITHER=YES|NO NO = smaller transfers, flatter colour
     PALETTE=ADAPTIVE|CUBE ADAPTIVE = clearer photos (default)
     SIXELCHECK=AUTO|FORCE|STRICT what to do if a terminal does not
                            report sixel support
     DOWNLOADS=YES|NO       NO = view only
     ENTER=VIEW|DOWNLOAD what Enter does on a file
     MAINMENU=INTERNAL      built-in menu, or your own MAIN.ANS
     LINESCROLL=NO use if ANSI scrolling looks wrong on a terminal
     ANSIMUSIC=YES|NO send ANSI music to the caller's terminal
     NODELOG=YES log what callers do to NODEn.LOG
     TRACE=YES write CDVIEW.DBG - turn it on only to find
                            launch problems (rolls over at 256 KB)

 Descriptions come from the lists already on the CD (FILES.BBS, DIR1...,
 00_INDEX.TXT, SF_FILES.BBS, DESCRIPT.ION) and folder descriptions from
 DIRS.TXT. Nothing to set up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
 PART 2 - FOR CALLERS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

 You need a terminal that shows sixel graphics: RGTERM, SyncTERM
 (recent), MagiTerm, and others. If your terminal does not say it
 supports sixel, you will be asked whether to try anyway.

 AREA MENU
     arrows move the bar Enter open the area
     a number open that area PgUp/PgDn other menu pages
     ESC or Q leave the door

 FILE LISTING
     arrows move the bar PgUp/PgDn page
     Enter view the picture / open the folder or ZIP
     SPACE tag a file (bar moves down)
     C              clear all tags
     D download the tagged files, or the file under the bar
                    if nothing is tagged
     S              search by name
     a number open that file or folder by its number
     ESC back one level: out of a ZIP, up a folder, then
                    back to the area menu

 VIEWING A PICTURE
     N / P          next / previous picture
     T tag it D download it
     Enter          back to the listing
     any key while it is being sent stops it

 READING ANSI ART AND TEXT
     Up / Down one line PgUp / PgDn one page
     Home / End top / bottom
     N / P          next / previous file
     T tag, D download, ESC back to the listing

 DOWNLOADS
     ZModem only. Most terminals start receiving by themselves. You are
     shown the file list and total size first and asked to confirm.
     Press Ctrl-X a few times to cancel.

 What CDVIEW lists: pictures (GIF JPG PNG BMP PCX TIF TGA, JXL if the
 sysop has installed it), RIP art, ANSI art (ANS), text (ASC TXT NFO),
 and ZIP archives, which open like folders.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
 TROUBLESHOOTING
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Door will not start, or only works on a later try
     Set TRACE=YES, try again and read CDVIEW.DBG. The usual cause is an
     old DOOR32.SYS - make sure /P (or line 2 of CDVIEW.CFG) points at
     the folder the BBS writes the drop file to for THIS call.

 "Didn't say it supports sixel graphics"
     The terminal did not answer the check. If it does support sixel,
     answer Yes. SIXELCHECK=FORCE skips the question.

 JXL files are not listed
     JXL.DLL is missing, is not 32-bit, or the Microsoft Visual C++
     2015-2022 Redistributable (x86) is not installed. CDVIEW.DBG says
     which.

 RIP art looks wrong
     Check the FONTS folder has all 10 .CHR files.

 ANSI scrolling looks wrong
     Set LINESCROLL=NO.
